The scanner is a vital link to the fire buff. There are many frequencies and radio protocols being used by fire departments throughout New England. The need for a quality scanner and numerous two way radios is crucial in getting the information quickly and accurately.
Digital vs Analog - Two major changes in Scanning protocols
Uniden - The scanners being manufactured today from this company are great for the serious buff. I currently us 3-BCT15 and 1-BCT996 for digital departments
2. Radio Shack - These scanners are very sensitive and many mimic the Uniden features and are sometimes less expensive due sales.
I also use Commercial two-way radios due to the sensitivity and clarity of the signals. Here are some of the Buff friendly brands that I currently use:
Radio Clubs - These groups which are very active in the Northeast are a great tool for any fire buff. With multiple repeaters and reciprocal agreements you can share information from New Jersey to Maine.
Providence Citywide Fire Network
Internet Scanner Sites - The information superhighway is a great source for listening to cities and areas outside the normal traveling distances. With a few clicks you can be listening to FDNY or Boston FD as companies arrive.
Scanboston.com - ScanRI - Mass fire radio
As with any service some of these site charge for listening or ask for a donation to keep the site going. This is a small price to pay for the avid scanner buff.
Paging Services - Over the years the buff has added many tools to help keep track of the fires. The two way pager or Alpha Pager is one of the best tools going. For a small fee you can receive Fire, Police, Major News and National coverage while away from the scanners or from areas that you cannot hear.
